Ed Hamm, while working with Rhodeside & Harwell, provided technical design services to review Prince William County’s inventory of pedestrian facilities and to create new standards and typical sections for sidewalks and streets in the County’s activity centers. The final product meets the new Secondary Street Acceptance Standards as issued by VDOT. Virginia maintains all secondary streets in the state except for those in several exempted cities. Prince William County is incorporating these new standards into its ongoing effort to implement the recommendations of its Comprehensive Plan and transform itself into a more urban, walkable and transit-oriented community.
The project tasks include reviewing and updating the County’s inventory of pedestrian facilities; conducting a gap analysis to identify gaps in the pedestrian network; developing written and graphic pedestrian facility standards and typical sections; recommending implementation strategies for filling gaps in the pedestrian network; and incorporating the standards in new development. In addition, the RHI team applied “complete streets” principles and ADA requirements to the standards to ensure that the resulting pedestrian facilities will provide accessibility, comfort, and safety for all modes of transportation and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
